CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Trick—

“Maybe she can stay with Charlotte while we’re gone.”

Anna and I arrived in Vegas this morning, and I’m tired. If I weren’t, maybe I wouldn’t make such a stupid suggestion to my president.

Daytona looks up from his desk and pins me with a pissed off look. “With the mob after her? Fuck no!” He jabs his index finger at me. “This is your deal.”

“You want me to leave her alone at my house, or haul her ass to Sturgis with us?”

Lobo sits next to me. He darts his eyes uncomfortably between us—his VP and his president.

Daytona drags a frustrated hand down his face. “Okay, fine. You and Lobo stay behind.” He points a finger at me. “But do not drag Cherry into this, understand?”

“You want us to miss Sturgis?” I can’t believe he said that, especially since our club’s national meet takes place at Sturgis, and it’s a required run. This year they plan to stay in Sturgis an extra week at the MC’s forty-four acre campground. Chapters from all over will be there.

“Yeah, you’re gonna miss the national meet. Lobo is excused since he’s hanging back to watch over the clubhouse. You, on the other hand, are going to get fined five-hundred bucks.”

He’s letting me off easy. He could make me go, and we both know it. Showing up at our club’s national meet without your VP is unheard of. I wonder how he’s going to explain it.

I start to rise.

“Sit down.”

Great. There’s more.

“Don’t do anything until we get back. We’ll deal with this then.”

I stare at him.

“Understand me, VP?”

“I got it.”

“You fuck this up, national won’t have to send nomads after you. I’ll kill you myself.”

“Got it.”

Daytona surges to his feet and swats an empty whiskey bottle off the edge of his desk. It flies across the room and smashes against the wall. Then he points a finger at me. “Do not make me regret this.”

I nod, and he storms out of the office, flinging the door against the wall. We follow him out.

“Mount up!” His bark carries through the clubhouse. Most of my brothers’ bikes are already loaded down with bedrolls, plus there’s a prospect driving a chase van with extra supplies. Watching the club roll out is a sight to see. I’ve never missed this event, and it’s strange to be hanging back.

I walk over to where Anna sits at the bar. I grab her hand and tug. “Come on.”

I lead her outside to watch everyone pull out. We stand on the porch as a dozen bikes thunder to life, then one by one fall into formation. They pull down the dirt road, single file. When they get to the blacktop, they fan out two-by-two and roar down the highway.

The prospect driving the van stops to lock the gate, then hauls ass after them.

I look over at Lobo. “Sorry you got dragged into this.”

“I was hanging back this trip regardless of your deal.”

“Why’s that?”

“He wanted someone to watch out for Cherry while he’s gone.”

“A prospect couldn’t do that?”

“He wanted a patch on the job.
